LYRICS

I post these lyrics with a sad heart. After a recent gig I was asked to post the lyrics to Petition by a woman named Sally Carr. Sally was a supporter of all our  local musicians and a very pleasant person. I recently  found out she passed away.  Thank you Sally. We will miss you.
My lyrics are constantly evolving.  Just as every performance is different, the lyrics may change too.

Petition                                           R. Rubin  © Copyright 1999

The people they are sad today

Their freedom has been taken away

And nobody knows how it happened

They all just went to bed one night

They didn’t even know to fight

And now they all ask

How’d this happen

And now they sit and cry,

They’re too stunned to speak

They talk about their fear and their shame , yeah,  shame yeah,

Because they realize they’ve  had their chance

They were afraid to sign the petition, they were afraid to put down their name,

They were afraid to sign the petition, they were afraid to put down their name.

For it may be a crime one day

To grow carrots or just to pray

We must not sit back while this happens

We must all become more aware

We who think we know right and fair

We must help to shape those decisions

So you just can’t sit back      You must be involved

That ugly beast called greed can be tamed yeah,  tamed yeah

We have the power to do anything

Don’t be afraid to sign the petition

Don’t be afraid to put down your name………

DONT BE AFRAID!!!!!

Wild Woman         ©Robert Rubin   1979

Well, she’s the kind of woman makes a fine first impression

And you glad when she comes around

She’s got lots of class and she’s known all over town

Cause she’s working for a cause and she works with nature’s laws

And you should hear her sing her song

She got all the answers cause she knows what’s right from wrong.

And she’s got a strong sense of the wild woman within

She’s got her confidence and she don’t take no shit from no men

She’s got a strong sense of the wild woman within

She’s tapped her power source and she’s a force to be reckoned with.

Everywhere she goes, she wears the nicest clothes

The women say she looks so fine

All the fella’s know her

And you know they’re out there trying

Cause she loves to dance to the break of dawn

Oh she’ll party out all night

But she always keeps her balance

And she never loses sight.

And she’s got a strong sense of the wild woman within

She’s got her confidence and she don’t take no shit from no men

She’s got a strong sense of the wild woman within

She’s tapped her power source and she’s a force to be reckoned with.

MOCHI COOKING            ©Robert Rubin  1999   lyrics

You know my baby

She loves to fix good food

Yeah my baby she makes sure we eat good

You know my baby she love to cook good food

Yeah my baby she makes us eat raw greens

And when she cooks them our vegetables are steamed

Yeah my baby she cooks fresh  rice and beans

You know my baby she makes fresh carrot juice

Yeah my baby she makes fresh carrot juice

You know my baby

She cooks lots of tofu

But not tonight because  tonight!

She’s got some Mochi cooking

Got some mochi cooking

She’s got some Mochi cooking

Got some mochi cooking

She’s got some Mochi cooking

Got some mochi cooking

She’s got some Mochi cooking

Got some mocha cooking

She’s got some mocha cooking

Ain’t having no tofu tonight.

LITTERING      ©  Robert Rubin

About singing this song to you now

I’m a little apprehensive

Don’t want to come off rude

Don’t want to be offensive

You know that cigarette smoking     Yeah

Has gotten lots of bad press

There’s another aspect,   of that habit

I’d like to address

So now please listen here o what we say

You smokers should carry an ashtray…..   Hey    Hey

Cause when you toss those butts on the ground

When you toss those butts on the ground

When you TTBOTG

IT’s Littering

It’s Littering

Walking down the street

What do you see

Every single city, every country

What do you see?

In the Redwood forest,    Path to    Sixth biggest tree    What do you  see

Walking on the path to the beach   WDYS..So    now …….

STOP LITTERING

Man in New Orleans    ©Robert Rubin

Well there’s a man down in New Orleans

He is a wise man and a man of means and he says

Do what you have to do

Do what you need to do

But, do what you love

Please  what you love to do

He said that every day you’re making the choice

You better listen to your inner voice

When you

Do what you have to do

Do what you need to do

Please, do what you love

Do what you love to do

There’s a man in Pacific Beach

He likes to practice what he preaches {he skates and says]

Do what you have to do

Do what you need to do

Please, do what you love

Do what you love to do

Well there’s a man down in New Orleans

Said he was from Brookly but i thought he was from Queens, till he said

Do what you have to do

Do what you need to do

But, do what you love

Please  what you love to do

Sanga Samba                      ©Robert Rubin

You do the Sanga Samba

It’s not a Rhumba,

It’s not a Mambo, it’s not a Tango,

It’s not a cha cha

It’s not a Fox Trot,

It’s not a break dance,  It isn’t Hip Hop

You dance with Buddha, show non attachment

It’s coastal music, you can’t refuse it.

Come On    Sanga Samba with me.

You do the Sanga Samba

It’s not a Rhumba,

It’s not a Mambo, it’s not a Tango,

It’s not Flamenco ,  its not Calypso

It’s not rock and roll and it’s not Disco.

You dance with Buddha, show non attachment

It’s coastal music, you can’t refuse it.

Come On    Sanga Samba with me.

Come On    Sanga Samba with me.

Just Say No             R. Rubin  ©

If they offer you drugs

Tell them you don’t do drugs

You’d better take care of yourself

No it isn’t funny

It’s worth more than money

Don’t you know your health is your wealth

And you know that you’ve only got one body now,  and you have got to keep it whole

Don’t you know that your body is a temple

It’s the temple of your holy soul

If they offer you drugs

Tell them you don’t do drugs

If they offer you drugs

Tell them you don’t do drugs

Just say no Just Say No Just say no  NO

Walk to Town     © Robert Rubin

Let me tell you a story, bout a neighbor of mine

Old English Ale 5 or 6 he would buy

One day I saw him walking to town

He was walking with his head to the ground

Cause you see one evening he went out for a drive,

and a cop stopped him gave him a DUII

And now he walks     He walks to town

You know he walks   He walks to town

OH Yeah he walks    He walks to town

Yeah he walks   He walks around

Oh those DUII’s they’ll really get you down

They’ll make you walk   Walk to town.

Let   me tell you a story bout my good friend Mark

Driving home from work, yeah it was dark

Cop pulls him over says your headlight out

Then he goes WHAM on the hood and says ITs working now

Mark says I’m sober man I can drive

The cops says I’d  love to give a DUII and make you walk

WTT……..

So late one night I’m coming home from a gig

I see my friends been stopped by a ….Big

City Police car on a county road,

Cop says your friends gonna have to be towed

I say she looks alright to me

He roughs me up and says son soon you’ll see her doing the walk…..the WTT

So listen my friends please listen to me

There gonna stop you just wait and see

Minimum 90 days  your license will be lost

And you just might find yourself  tossed

So we ain’t kicking you no jive

If you’ve been drinking you better not drive

You better  Walk Walk through town You  better walk, walk through town, Walk walk around, Walk walk to town

Oh those DUII’s will really get you down,

They’ll make you walk WTT…………WALK

Bayfront Dancing

Gotta get down gotta get down gotta get down to the Bayfront

Gotta get down gotta get down gotta get down to the Bayfront

I was down on the Bayfront       I was feeling good

Happy hour at Neptune Wharf      left me in a good mood

So I went to the Whales Tale      Mellow people there

Had a meal and a couple of beers     And I left with no cares

And I went to the Piptide      But it wasn’t happening yet

Found out then that at the Pub     Bones was my best bet

Cause I was…..Bayfront Dancing last night

Bayfront dancing and everything was just allright allright allright

Bayfront dancing last night, and everything was allright

Everything was all right! …………

And I went to Embarcadero, saw Inoke there

Boy he makes a lot of music                Just him and his 2 hands

And I went to the Bayhaven             Looking for Blues jam,

I found out Rosso had another gig             So I took it on the lam

Cause I was…..Bayfront Dancing last night

Bayfront dancing and everything was just allright  allright  allright

Bayfront dancing last night, and everything was allright

Everything was all right  Everything was all right Everything was all right!

Well alright

Big Ending!

Market                                          ©Robert Rubin

My baby she told me she’s thirsty

The ice box is empty my dear

Would you please go down to the market

And pick up some beer…

Yes I’ll go right down to the market

I’ll go right down to the market

Yes I’ll go right down to the market and pick up some beer

I drove down and picked up a six pack

A local micro brewery

I brought it right back to my baby

Who asked would you share them with me

And now I’m relaxing and thinking

And one thing is perfectly clear

You know I’m in love with my baby

And I’m glad I went out for that beer.

And [ anytime you ask]  I’ll go right down to the market

I’ll go right down to the market

Yes I’ll go right down to the market and pick up some beer……

I wrote American Car about Mike Deaton’s new, used American car.  We played the Newport Eagles with the Avery Family Band,  and I was inspired.

American Car                                                          ©  Robert  Rubin

All I want is a big old American car

To drive across the country

I would sing and play

On my big old American guitar

As I drive across this beautiful country

And I would stop in a town at a local newsstand, check up on the music scene, inquire about the bands

I’d find out where live music, find out where live music’s played

And I would spend all night in a honky tonk

Playing lots of music but I won’t get too drunk

Cause I’m a musician, that’s the life I lead

Playing lots of music is all the high I need because

All I want is a big old American car

To drive across the country

I would sing and play

On my big old American guitar

As I drive across this beautiful country   INSTRUMENTAL

Because   All I want is a big old American car To drive across the country

I would sing and play  On my big old American guitar

As I drive across this beautiful country.

Blues in  A                 Robert Rubin    ©

I’ve got the blues

I’ve got the blues

I’ve got the blues today

And when I have the blues, when I have the blues

I play the blues in A

I’ve got the blues

I’ve got the blues

I’ve got the blues today

And when I have the blues, when I have the blues

I play the blues in A

You can play the blues in B

But it’s not the same to me

You can play the blues in B or C or D, E F, G….but in A

That’s the way,

I like to hear my blues played

And when I have the blues, when

I have the blues

I play the blues in A

END:  But not today

Cause I’m gonna chase those blues away.

I was the Newport Saturday Farmers Market Manager. This song was inspired by the drive up, one dark and dreary dismal morning.

Cat on your Car                 ©Robert Rubin

As I was driving down the street this morning

I happened to glance out your way

It was a dark and dreary dismal morning

But what I saw sure made my day……….

Cause I saw a cat on your car

Cat on your car    Lily

Yes I saw a  cat on your car      Cat on your car today

Yes I saw a a cat on your car        Cat on your car Lily

And I just want to say     It brightened my day,   It sure made my day………

It wasn’t Missy Sue, It wasn’t Freddy

It wasn’t Nina wasn’t Max

It wasn’t Ayla and it wasn’t Adobe

I know it was one of your cats…………

Cause I saw a cat on your car

Cat on your car    Lily

Yes I saw a a cat on your car      Cat on your car today

Yes I saw a a cat on your car       Cat on your car Lily

And I just want to say

It brightened my day,    It sure made my day……………….

Cause don’t you know when there’s a cat on your car

Everything is going to get better………….

Yes I saw a a cat on your car       Cat on your car Lily

And I just want to say

It brightened my day,    It sure made my day………………

Colorado Wiccan                         © Robert Rubin

I was down in New Orleans in a voodoo store

When a Colorado Wiccan said to me

I speak the truth I speak my mind

She said?  There’s fantasy and there’s reality some time they both inter twine

She said    You don’t need no guru, No leader or preacher

You just have to know what’s right from wrong and everyone’s your teacher

She said    some people smoke marijuana, some people drink a few beers

But I get high when I go inside   It helps me to stay clear

She said

I get high when I go inside

I helps me to stay clear

I get high when I go inside

I like to see what I can hear.

She said

We have a world in changes, that’s a natural fact

It is as much what happens as is how you react

Then she said

I get high when I go inside

I helps me to stay clear

I get high when I go inside

I like to see what I can hear.

COMMERCIAL                 Robert Rubin

This is a song that I like to play during commercials

My wife says she heard a song  just  like this before

But this is the song that I like to play

It could be Billy Joel or from far off Broadway

Oh but this is the song that I like to play during commercials

MISERY                                                                         ©  Robert  Rubin  2018

You sold  our house, you got our car You took our kids

And you went far away

And now all I’ve got is misery

You took our dog, you took our cat

You took our big screen television set

And now all I’ve got are memories

Why did you go away

Now all I do is cry

Why didn’t you stick around

And give us, another try

Don’t think I can make it

Not even one day

Don’t know what to do

Doesn’t help to pray                               Don’t know what to say

Because all I’ve got is misery

NOTHING in COMMON           © Robert Rubin

Well they met at a really big party

But they didn’t get a chance to dance

He was really busy, and she was drunk

Then they met the next day      Out at the old sweat lodge

She looked really good,    with only mud on………………

They shared some laughter      They   shared  some beers

They shared their secrets       Shared   their  fears

They said that they were both     Afraid to love again

They should have,        Just stayed friends……………..

Then they spent lots of time together        They made love every day

Then from  out of the clear blue sky    One day here’s what she said………

“ We’ve got Nothing in Common      We’ve got nothing the same”

Well now she has no problem      But cause he still loves her he has his pain…..

And he  wondered   how this could happen

All his dreams,  all the plans he has made

Got shot up into nothing         When  she  came out and said

We’ve got,   Nothing in Common       We’ve  got,  nothing  the same

Well now she has no problem      But cause he still loves her he has his pain….

Has his pain…He has pain….has his pain..

Cause he still loves her he has his pain,   has his    ………..INSTRUMENTAL

Nothing in Common     Nothing the same      She’s  got no problem

But cause he still loves her he has his pain  cause he still loves her,  he has his pain

Cause  he still loves her……. he has his pain…..

SO Much About Love         Robert Rubin

I was so lonely

I was so blue

You came along

And you taught me something new

You showed me things I’d heard about,

But never believed they were true

You showed me so much about love

I was a loser        Didn’t  think twice

You showed me I was playing against fixed dice

You taught me I could win

Just by being nice

You  taught  me so much about love

I was angry     And afraid         I was down and out

Then you came into my world

You showed me what life’s all about

I was a bad boy   Had no regrets

You taught me I would     Have to balance my debts

You say the best things haven’t happened yet

You taught me so much about love

This was written after Hurricane Katrina. The sentiment of “the kindness of strangers in a storm’ came from Katie Couric during a newscast.

Strangers in a Storm           Robert Rubin

Some show their worst     Some show their best

When situations    Present  a test

And  some  show the kindness of Strangers in a storm

Some show their gumption      Some  show their nerve

When  people realize       It’s their time to serve

And they show the kindness     Of strangers in a storm     did you see it

It comes fast       It comes strong

Let your heart sing your souls song

Some show their colors     Whatever  the  shade

Some show their mettle     Of  what their made

And some show the kindness of strangers in a storm

You never know           When it might start

You have to have it      Strong in you heart

To show off your kindness to strangers in a storm

What are we here for     This song and dance

Maybe were waiting     For our next chance

To show off our kindness to strangers in a storm………

We’ll never know

It might get strange

Before you realize

Everything’s changed

Please show off your  kindness  to strangers in a storm ….

Strawberry Bringing Baby      Robert Rubin

I was sitting around….Very depressed

Sitting around,  making a mess

When in comes my baby, She walks up to me

And hands me a ripe red strawberry

She’s my strawberry bringing baby

And she brings red ripe strawberries to me

She’s my strawberry bringing baby

She’s my strawberry bringing baby

She’s my strawberry bringing baby

She’s my strawberry bringing baby

She’s my strawberry bringing baby, and she brings red ripe strawberries to me

TMZ                      ©  Robert Rubin

It’s been a long time

Since you have seen me

On the internet or TV        but just maybe………..

I’m  gonna be  On TMZ

I’m  gonna be,   on TMZ

I do not know when that’s  gonna be

But you’ll see  me on TMZ….

I do not know               where  they’re gonna  catch me

I might be flying a kite on the beach

I won’t be rude to the paparazzi

Cause they put me on TMZ……..

I will be nice as I can be

I wonder what would  they ever ask me

I won’t be rude to the paparazzi

Cause they put me on TMZ…….

My mother in Florida    she watches  lots of TV

One day she even might watch TMZ

It be so  great if my mom could see

Me on  TV on  TMZ

Stop the Spray    ©Robert Rubin    1979

I was walking through the forest

On a bright, a bright clear sunny day,

I was walking through the forest,

When I heard I heard somebody say,

If you walking through the forest

You better watch out        Watch out for the spray

Because you may be dead tomorrow,

But while your still alive, still alive today

Better Pray, Stop the Spray, stop the spray

Cause they’re poisoning our water, and we’re all, we’re all  gonna mutate,

And they’re causing forced abortions, who could say all those miscarriages are fate,

And they will not hear our pleading,

That they must stop now it’s already too late

Better pray Stop the Spray, Stop the Spray,

INSTRUMENTAL

So if you love the forest, and you live around her and you want to stay

And if you want your children, to be born alive and to grow up healthy

And if you know the forests, have survived for centuries without that spray

Better pray, stop the spray,  stop the spray.
